Year 6 Students Visit the Dowse Museum

Posted on by Jeanine Huynh

On Monday the 3 of September the Years 6 Students were treated to a trip to the Dowse Art Museum. As students have been learning about Ranganui and Papatuanuku in the Creation Story in relation to our Kuta Ahurea programme, this was a great opportunity for them to see how other artists have interpreted the story.

In many cultures around the world, sticks are decorated to represent ideas about their cultures and have different uses such as in the Aboriginal culture. The American Indians have totem poles. In the Maori culture we have pouwhenua to represent their ancestors. The Students were given the wonderful experience of creating their own artwork that would represent themselves and their families using sticks. Each student’s artwork was very unique to them and very creatively inspired by who they are and their ancestry. Take a look.
The first couple of photos are of just some of the Year 6 Students with their beautifully decorated sticks.
