On a beautiful but crisp morning last Friday, it was the turn of Room’s 14 & 15 to visit Koraunui Marae. It was made all the more special for our students by the fact that they were to be part of a welcome Powhiri for a group of St Bernards College Students and their teachers also visiting the marae.
As our students sat quietly inside the marae, the St Bernard’s Boys were welcomed on with a Karakia. After speeches were given and waiatas sung, Shane enthralled those present with a special talk about the history of the carvings, pictures and paintings inside the marae. We were then invited to greet the St Bernard’s Students with a hongi.
After a morning tea of hot chocolate and delicious doughnuts, the classes made their way down to the Hub where Chantelle, the Junior Librarian gave an interesting talk on the Dewey Decimal System for classifying books in the library. The children were then divided into two groups so that they either use the library, sit down and read a book or play a special card game, and swap over half way through.
What a thoroughly enjoyable morning!
