Matariki the Whale Postcards

Posted on by Kara McAuliffe

In Room 11, we loved hearing tales of the whale Matariki visiting the Wellington Harbour. We watched videos of him splashing around and stopping the ferry from coming in! We thought about what it must have been like for him on his visit and what he would have heard, seen and felt.

We wrote postcards pretending we were Matariki to his pod sharing his experiences :)

Here are a few of them…

Dear Family,

It was lovely visiting Wellington. Sometimes I heard a horn going “errrr!” It scared me.

And also there were people everywhere and all they did was get their cameras out. Click click click! I saw lots of boats zooming across my path.

Dear Pod,

It was a bit noisy in Wellington. I guess there is one thousand things going on at once. I guess those humans are in a hurry. I want you guys to come with me. I saw about 1000 trains. It has been the best days of my life.

From your child, Matariki (Felix)

Dear Pod,

It was lovely in Wellington. I accidentally blocked a ferry from coming across to park. It was trying to get me to move. I didn’t move so it blew it’s horn! It was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard. I think it’s called a fog horn.

I think you should go to Wellington Harbour, it is lovely, but you might get a little startled by the temperature. It is way more lovely than the frozen water.

The water splashed against the rocks as I whacked my tail.

Well I can’t tell you anymore but I’ll try to write again.
Love your lovely Matariki (Olivia)

Dear Family,

I had a wonderful time in Wellington. I had lots of friends. My best friend was the ferry. We played sometimes because he needs to take people different places. Some times I miss you. Also I saw the Beehive. I think I am the luckiest whale.
Love Matariki (Jessika)

Dear Pod,

I have been visiting Wellington! I have been here for a long time. It was very busy and noisy. It was warmer than usual.
Lots of love,

Dear Pod,

It was lovely in Wellington. I accidentally swam into Wellington Harbour! I heard a foghorn mrrrrrrrr!

I miss you whales! It is very different here. All the humans did was paddle out on their boats and stand on the dock and take pictures.

Did you know that under the water it is yucky and murky and dark and I could not see?

I will see you soon.

Love Matariki the Whale (Annie)

Dear Family,

It is a wonderful time in Wellington Harbour. I’ve seen lots of cool things. I see flashes of cameras and people gasping and I have heard cruise ships coming in and out. It is so cool! I’ve been jumping up and down.

Dear Family,

I have a friend to play with. It is a big ferry and he has many friends. I’m missing you a lot. I will see you soon.

Dear Pod,

It was lovely visiting Wellington! I heard yelling and cameras clicking. And I heard the ferry. The horn was very loud and it shook the water.

I saw that I accidentally went to Wellington. There were cameras and boats everywhere. I also saw people kayaking. They looked like multi coloured right whales.

I felt the bottom of the ocean. I felt very scared when the ferry came close to me. It was not a friendly whale.

It was nice visiting Wellington.

Dear Pod,

I loved staying in Wellington. I heard a horn of a big boat and I think it’s called a ferry. People kept on taking photos of me and click click click!! I heard yells and gasps and I saw the Beehive as I swam across the harbour.

Love from Matariki (Kade)
