Matariki Celebration Final Details (1 more sleep to go)

26th June 2024

Kia ora e te whānau

It is almost time for our Matariki Celebration and Breakfast (1 more sleep to go) and we are ready to celebrate. The weather is currently looking good (should it change and we have to cancel, a call will be made by 6pm and will be emailed and posted on our facebook page by 6.30pm – no news means we are still go)

First of all a very big thank you to everyone for your support (from offering to help to donating firewood and loaning us braziers for the morning). Without this generosity events like this couldn’t happen, and to the amazing Tawhai staff who have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure that this is going to be an amazing event.

Just so everyone has the same message, tomorrow is an informal gathering to celebrate Matariki at dawn and although we can’t see the star cluster from our Kura, we will have these represented by 9 braziers burning away. Breakfast (toast and cereal) and hot drinks will be provided and everyone that is coming is encouraged to connect with others and mingle and share stories.

We will be celebrating out on the courts (as the grass will be a bit wet from the recent rain) but have the fires burning around the Northern edge of the court (these will be roped off for safety reasons). As the students arrive at school they will need to go to Room 16 and collect their lantern that they have made and their candle (battery powered tea light candle) and head out to the courts.

We will have a photo taken of everyone with their lanterns before starting the day with a Karakia at 6.45am. Breakfast will then be available in rooms 14, 15, 11 and 12 and there will be helpers in there to support everyone.

Please note that all children coming to the morning celebration before 8.30am need to be supervised by an adult and cannot be dropped off at school unsupervised until 8.30 when we are officially open.
