Kia ora e te whānau
We welcome all our Tawhai Whānau and community to come along and celebrate with us for Matariki 2024.
A big thank you to everyone who has filled in the google form to indicate that they are coming along to our Matariki celebration and breakfast on Thursday 27th June 6.30 am start. Please click the link below and fill in the google form (this helps us with our planning) if you haven’t already and are intending on attending with your whānau.
We are currently monitoring the weather for Thursday and as this event is weather dependent – we will make a decision Wednesday evening on whether we go ahead as planned or change to our wet weather plan (see below). Please keep an eye out Wednesday evening on our Facebook page and your emails as we will send out communication when we have made our decision.
Matariki Celebration and Breakfast
Please note that all children coming to the morning celebration before 8.30am need to be supervised by an adult and cannot be dropped off at school unsupervised until 8.30 when we are officially open.
Timeline of events for the day.
6.00 am – Set up and prep
6.30 am – Whānau and guests start arriving
6.45am – Opening Karakia
7.00am – Breakfast available
7.00-9.00am – Chill time/Kai time – waiata, games etc.
8.30am – School open as normal for everyone
9.30am – Waiata and Kapa Haka performance under the canopy
10-11am – First round of rotation activities.
11.30am-12.30pm -Second round of rotation activities
12.30-3pm – Children return to their own classes for the afternoon.
Should the weather put a stop to our celebration – here is option 2 for the day.
There will be no morning celebration with our gathering and fire pits burning (we will have to cancel the early morning part and school will start at normal time on Thursday)
Children will still have a Matariki breakfast but this will be in their classrooms from 9am.
Our waiata and Kapa Haka performance will be put on hold and the rotation activities will still start at the normal times.
All those who have offered to lend us a brazier etc, could these please be brought in by Wednesday afternoon (we will name these and ensure that they are returned to the correct whānau after the event).
Thank you to everyone for your support for this amazing event – we are hoping to give our tamariki and Whānau a different experience of celebrating Matariki – the Māori New Year.
