Kia ora e te whānau,
For term 4 inquiry the focus for the Kopara Hub is safety. The connection to their whakatauki is that to nurture and grow they need to keep themselves safe and learn safe practices. They will be looking at Water Safety (a session at SV Pool is currently being planned), Fire Safety (the Fire Safety team will take sessions on 30th Oct), Cyber Safety, Sun Safety, Safety at Home, and they will review the Dog Safety sessions that they had in Term 2.
The Horoeka Hub will also be looking at ‘keeping healthy and safe’ during this term. The kaiako have some exciting plans this term to deepen the tamariki’s understanding of what “being safe” looks like, and how they can make sure they are being “safe”.
Today we were very fortunate in having Jamie Gray who is a firefighter based at Trentham come along to the Kura to talk to our Tamariki both from Kopara Hub and Horoeka, 2 classes at a time about fire safety. He talked to them about the many things that the fire brigade does to keep us all safe apart from putting out fires, such as help with medical emergencies, motor vehicle incidents, search and rescue, civil defence, and natural disaster responses.
He showed the Tamariki a smoke alarm and activated it so that they could hear the noise it would make if it went off.
With the help of a story book with great pictures, Jamie guided the Tamariki through the right thing to do in the event of a house fire.
With the help of a volunteer from each session he went through the scenario of how to contact the emergency services, dialling 111, asking for fire service, and letting the operator know the correct location!
He discussed how important it was to have a plan in place of where to assemble if such an event occurred. Usually just by the mailbox is a good spot!
Our Tamariki across the two hubs were so eager and fully engaged in the session and provided some good answers when asked questions by Jamie.
To round off the session, the Tamariki practiced having a fire drill and after Jamie set off a smoke alarm, they quietly filed out to the school grounds, the normal assembly point and had their role called.
Thank you, Jamie, for coming along to the kura to talk to our Tamariki!
Here are a few photos taken from the 3 sessions. Thank you to Mrs Treadwell for sharing the first photo! A BIG thank you to Miss Auker for stepping in as kaiwhakaahua for the Rooms 9a & 8 session.
