Minor Ailments Service – Free Health Care From Some Pharmacies

Jamaica, our Public Health Nurse, has sent through this information about accessing health care for minor illnesses.

The minor health conditions service (also referred to as minor ailments) is now available in several Lower Hutt pharmacies. This service enables eligible people to consult with a pharmacist at selected local pharmacies, and if appropriate, access free approved medicine.

The service is to help people with minor illnesses to access healthcare at a pharmacy and is available for:

Children under 14 years of age, and whānau members* (any age), with the same symptoms

Community services card (CSC) holders

Māori and pacific people

*For example, if the pharmacist gives your tamariki medicine for scabies and you, or brothers or sisters also have symptoms, they may give advice and medicine to all of you.

The conditions that pharmacists can help you with include:

Skin ailments (nits, eczema, scabies, fungal infections)

Eye inflammation

Dehydration (usually from vomiting and diarrhoea).
